Online Scientific Catalog with Secure Order Request System
There are currently over 1,300 standard reference materials under NIST's management. NIST's printed bi-annual SRM
catalog is quickly out-of-date once it is printed. The addition/deletion of new materials, as well as frequently changing meta-data on existing materials, resulted in the decision to build a web-based catalog. Blue Atlas designed, developed and maintains an accurate online version of the catalog.
The online SRM project has achieved the following goals:
- a contemporary web interface based upon NIST's existing web site graphics
- usability that encourages repeat visitors
- adherence to NIST's web application security standards
- provides a mechanism for authorized NIST personnel to easily add/edit/delete SRM meta-data
Since the launch of the online catalog, we have enhanced the system be developing and integrating an online order request system. Due to the hazardous nature of some of the SRMs, the security implications negated development of an online ordering and payment system. Rather, we developed an order request system that supports automated order requests, while relying on manual order approval and payment processing. This approach has brought efficient self-service to the ORS site visitors, while allowed the SRM administrators to maintain control over access to the materials. The order request system has been seamlessly integrated with NIST's existing back-office system which resides on an AS400.
The SRM website, and associated order request system, provide:
- a simple application interface that provides intuitive navigation
- advanced search and browse functionality
- user-controlled data display options
- a secure administrative application for managing data
